Discovery of the Decade

To facilitate the Committee’s work in choosing the decade’s three leaders in innovation, previous winners need to update the file they used when they applied during the year they received the Award.  This can include reference to new indications, additional clinical trial results or observational data that cover optimal therapeutic benefits to patients – any information that they believe is relevant to the Committee’s award deliberations.

Previous Laureates can log here with their credential information, or create a new account here, in order to resubmit.

Please send a email to discoveryofthedecade@galienfoundation.org if you need more information about the Discovery of the Decade or login information.

Chairman of the USA Galien Awards Committee

Dear Colleague:
As we end another year of progress in the struggle against disease, I’d like to inform you of a decision by my fellow members of the Galien USA Awards Committee to expand and enhance our annual recognition of “the best of the best” in medical and diagnostic innovation.
The Prix Galien USA will be 10 years old in 2016.  Since our first awards event in 2007, more than 250 new molecular entities have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.  This year is likely to surpass the near-record number of 41 new drugs – many of them true breakthroughs – brought forward by the biopharmaceutical and medical technology industries to patients in 2015.
To celebrate our participating companies’ leadership in identifying  this decade as one of history’s most productive for research, the Committee will select three products – a pharmaceutical drug, a biotech drug and a medical or diagnostic technology  – as the “Discovery of the Decade.”  The three awards will be featured as a special highlight to the next annual ceremony at the American Museum of Natural History in New York on Thursday, October 27, 2016
Nomination for these three awards is applicable to every medicine and medical technology that the Committee selected as the category winner in our previous annual honors since 2007 – 34 in all, including the 2016 Prix Galien USA Laureates.  Each winning product has contributed to an unsurpassed record of clinical advances that embody the Galien Foundation’s mission to improve the state of global health.
We will cite the company winners for their leadership in innovative drug and technology development during the evening ceremony program in conjunction with the 2016 Prix Galien USA, which will include prominent leaders in health care as well as commentary from members of the Awards Committee.  As you know, the Committee is an independent body of biomedical scientists and key opinion leaders in the field of medicine which includes four Nobel Laureates.  Our choices are made solely on the basis of the best medical evidence without bias.
To facilitate the Committee’s work in choosing the decade’s three leaders in innovation, you will need to update the file you used when you applied during the year you received the Award. With regard to this, a special section of the Galien Foundation website will be dedicated to you. (www.galienfoundation.org à “Discovery of the Decade” Section).  This can include reference to new indications, additional clinical trial results or observational data that cover optimal therapeutic benefits to patients – any information that you believe is relevant to the Committee’s award deliberations.
Again, congratulations for doing the hard work to bring to market innovations that improve the lives of millions of patients worldwide.  On behalf of the Awards Committee, I look forward to another productive year in the research and development of new medicines and to greeting you once again in October – this time as we celebrate a new decade of continued progress for the Galien community.
With my best personal regards,

P. Roy Vagelos, M.D.
